ECR stands for Electronic Challan cum Return. It is the monthly return-cum-challan that employers file with the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) for their covered employees. ECR combines the contribution details with the payment, so the employer does not file a separate physical challan.

Employers generate ECR through the EPFO employer portal or through payroll software that is integrated with EPFO. The file includes each member's UAN, name, EPF wages, EPS wages, employee and employer contribution, NCP days, and any arrears. Once uploaded and validated, the employer pays the total amount and the return is treated as filed.

ECR must be filed and payment made by the 15th of the month following the salary month. For example, contributions for July 2026 must be deposited by 15 August 2026. Late payment attracts interest under Section 7Q and damages under Section 14B of the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.

Worked example

A company with 5 covered employees prepares the July 2026 ECR. The data includes:

| Employee | EPF wages | Employee PF | Employer PF | EPS | NCP days | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | A | ₹15,000 | ₹1,800 | ₹1,800 | ₹1,250 | 0 | | B | ₹12,000 | ₹1,440 | ₹1,440 | ₹999.60 | 2 | | C | ₹10,000 | ₹1,200 | ₹1,200 | ₹833.00 | 0 |

The company uploads the ECR, the system validates it, and the employer pays the total contribution through the portal.
